Our History

In the late l960s Harry O. Sitzberger, builder and home designer, saw a need for attractive, wear resistant seamless floors in kitchens, baths, hallways and basements. A new product showed promise.  It was a clear epoxy with color chips that provided a decorative wear resistant surface that was superior to other options on the market. As epoxy research developed new and better products, Sitzberger’s firm found itself working with architects, major paper and food manufacturers from around the state of Wisconsin.  They sought ways to effectively restore deteriorating concrete and create surfaces capable of withstanding heavy loads, steel wheeled carts, acids and other corrosive agents.  By l975 the Appleton, WI based firm had listed among its major clients firms such as Kimberly-Clark Corp., 3M, Ralston Purina, Procter and Gamble and Swiss Colony. In l986 the company changed its name from Surface Coating Consultants, Inc. to Protective Coating Specialists, Inc. to more fully reflect its mission.  Harry founded the company on understanding the importance of having talented and good employees that were taught to “treat every project as it is your own”.  The company eventually became referred to as” the epoxy people”. In 1986 Harrys son Steve was hired as a full time employee working in sales and project coordination.  By 1993 Steve became Director of Operations managing the crews, estimating and maintaining his customer base. As the company grew, so did its staff.  In 1994 Roy Valitchka was added to the sales team and with his vast business knowledge, his ability to connect with people and to ensure them that they always came first, he was able to propel our company growth in many manufacturing facilities throughout Wisconsin. By the early 2000’s the company doubled in size and was acknowledged as one of the top tier epoxy flooring contract in the United States.  In 2001 Peter Valitchka, Roy’s son, was added to the sales team.  After Harry’s unfortunate passing in December of 2001, Steve became President and Owner and began to lead the company. Today, we are very proud to be a second generation family-owned business that has been providing quality service throughout the Midwest for over 50 years. Protective Coating Specialist’s team of applicators installs over 750,000 square feet of concrete coatings per year. The industries we serve include, but are not limited to, food and beverage, pharmaceutical, healthcare, aviation, heavy manufacturing and even our local municipalities. Over the past 50 years, we have recognized that our integrity and craftsmanship are two key components to meeting our customers’ demands.  We stand behind every floor that we install and with that in mind, we believe we have created partnerships with the finest material suppliers from around the world that align with our same values.  With industry leading suppliers like Sika, Dur-A-Flex, Florock, Sherwin-Williams and Rust-Oleum, we have security that our partnerships will provide our clients with the flooring solution that they demand.  Our material partners have recognized us as one the top echelon contractors from around the country over the years with awards such as contractor of year, premium partner, elite installer and master installer awards. Our investment in our employees is also a critical part of our success.  Our installation crews are trained and certified to install various resinous flooring systems.  We believe that having craftsmen who are OSHA 10 trained is critical to jobsite safety.  This dedication is reflected by the fact that our average ERM rating over the past 5 years has been below .75.  Even when new OHSA regulations come out, such as the current silica rules, we are proactive in getting our team training so they stay safe out in the field.  Our membership with ABC of Wisconsin is a strong part in helping us to achieve our safety training needs. Steve’s dad Harry was known for the saying “give the customer the best by using the best products and with the best people you can find”.  We believe that our success over the past 50 years is a testament to Harry’s belief.  Utilizing time-tested products from trusted manufactures and staying committed to having the best people in the industry, Protective Coating Specialists is committed to being your specialty contractor when it comes to epoxy floor and wall coatings and polished concrete applications.
